Discussion:
placement of figure

When a figure ends up on a separate page, as in the end of a chapter,
I would like it to be at the top of the page, not centered.

I also have problems with adjusting the vertical spacing before/after
figures and equations. I have tried the commands

\setlength{\textfloatsep}{1em}
\setlength{\abovedisplayskip}{1em}

and

\addtolength{\textfloatsep}{1em}
\setlength{\abovedisplayskip}{1em}

etc, but the spacing just won't change.

Any advice?

Hi Nina,
I would try the package 'picins'. I always use it for including pictures
or figures. It works very well, is easy to use
and the pictures are placed directly where you want them. In addition,
you can put your picture inside the text, so that the text is written
around the picture, which is a nice effect.
Th documentation is quite short (about 7 pages, but you need only one or
two).
Hope I could help you,

Yannick
