ellipticalarc (pictex) and babel

Good day,

I'm novice in Latex but I need to translate a document from English to
French. I use MiKTeX 2.5 and the document contains figures drawn with
pictex.
My problem: "ellipticalarc" compiles well in an English environment
but produces errors when I use the babel package and select frenchb.

Is it a known problem or have I missed something?

Dear Maurice, bonjour,

I have tried using miktex 2.6 and frenchb and I got some errors and no
pdf file was produced.

Instead using frenchb, i used portuges and portuguese packages and no
errors was made. It looks fine.

Maybe the problem would lay on the frenchb package... some definition
or configuration inside it is changing the ellipticalarc works.

Hello Maurice,

In French one needs to redefine the behavior of ":" and "!".

One solution is to put before the pictex code
\shorthandoff{:}
and after
\shorthandon{:}
to get back the normal management of ":" in French.

If there is till an error, try with \shorthandoff{:!} \shorthandon{:!}.

Let us know if it solve the problem.

Just for my information, could you briefly explain why ":" and "!"
behave differently (and wrongly) in French.

Salut!!!

They do not "wrongly" behave.

In French typography, one puts an unbreakable space (in French: "une
espace fine" and "une espace") before "!" and ":" respectively.
Also for ";", "?" .
So the [francais]{babel} defines these behaviours, but then in some
cases (often for pictures: pictex, pgf/tikz, perhaps PSTricks) this
creates problems because ":" and "!" are used internally for the
drawings (like separating dimensions,...).

"\shorthandoff{:!}" suspend the French behaviour.
This has an unwanted effect: if you have a French text using ":!" in the
picture, it will not be properly rendered.
