Re-labelling footnotes in Abstract environment

I would like to be able to re-label the footnotes in the abstract environment of a LaTeX
document that is produced in the "article" document class. By default, any footnotes or
thanks that are put in the title or author sub-environments are labelled with a footnote
symbol, moving through from asterisk to dagger to double dagger and so on.

Is this possible? Something like works after the abstract environment, but not within it. I've
tried each of the following, to no avail.

\renewcommand{\thefootnote}{\arabic{footnote}}

\def\thefootnote{\arabic{footnote}}

\arabic{footnote}

\newcounter{authornote}

Thanks,
Randy
